Outlook

Making farmers’ lives easier through innovations has been our driver for the past seven decades. In the years ahead, the farmer and his needs will remain our central focus. We will innovate in services and products, based on five impact areas that we believe are crucial for the farmer’s licence to produce: improved environment, buy-in from consumers, farmers’ prosperity, animal welfare and sustainable dairy products.

Rethinking our approach to grass

'Lely Exos is designed around the value of grass. It makes us rethink our approach to grass. It stimulates a better balance in the year-round supply of fresh grass thanks to the intelligent planning and autonomous harvesting of the Lely Exos.'

Second-generation Lely Orbiter launched

As announced during EuroTier last year, the second-generation Orbiter is about to see the light of day. The next generation offers interested farmers a comprehensive package of additional technical and visual features, including the processing of yoghurt and cream.

The entire production technology has been further refined and fully automated, from the milk tank to the finished labelled milk bottle. In addition, the management software is more efficient and user-friendly. Another benefit is remote maintenance: this saves time and guarantees process stability – both important factors in daily work.

The exterior of the second-generation Orbiter is distinctive. With glass doors, the new design reflects the transparency that we strive for with the Orbiter.

The Lely Orbiter is our on-farm dairy processor. It shortens the milk production chain and makes it more transparent, meeting the growing consumer need for insight into the origin of products. In addition, the farmer gets a fair price for his dairy by expanding his product range. In this way, we help farmers close the gap between society and the farm.

For 2023, we are working towards the fifth farm in the Netherlands using Orbiter. And – a major milestone in the existence of Orbiter – we will also begin a pilot with a German farm.

Lely Exos

In 2020, we proudly introduced Lely Exos, a revolution that enables dairy farmers to produce more milk per cow per day, using grass from their own land – without requiring extra labour. In preparation for its commercial launch, we were able to further increase the number of testing machines in 2022. Over the past year alone, 13 Lely Exos machines collected and brought to the farm 11 million kilograms of fresh grass. These steps gave us more knowledge and experience and enabled us to develop the product even further. In 2023, we are increasing the number of Lely Exos machines. This expansion will accelerate our learning curve on both the innovation and market side. We are aiming for commercial go-live with Lely Exos before the end of 2023.

Lely Sphere

The Lely Sphere circular barn system reduces nitrogen emissions by an average of 70%, converting emissions into liquid circular fertiliser. In 2022, we continued our efforts to bring Lely Sphere to the market – we are still calling on the Dutch government to support farmers in tackling the nitrogen challenges through innovation. We have built a market-based team, responsible for selling and servicing Spheres and for executing Farm Management Support (FMS) based on its proposition. This team consists of people in the market and on the ground and allows us to accelerate the commercial presence of the Lely Sphere in the market.

Up until now we have been held back by the political environment around Lely Sphere. We are talking to all political stakeholders about the need for innovation instead of reducing the numbers of livestock. We are doing everything we can to ensure that the government chooses innovation.

What we achieved in 2022
Strategy
Drive innovation

Innovation is the answer to future challenges in the dairy sector. Labour shortages, growing world population, increasing focus on animal wellbeing and the environment. We believe automation is the answer, and as a farming innovator we do our best to help our dairy farmers to excel in sustainable dairy production.
