‘Given the resilience shown in the past year and the results booked, the Supervisory Board can only be optimistic about the future of Lely. The flexibility and decisiveness shown by both Lely’s leadership team and the employees in these turbulent times, provide a solid basis to realise Lely's ambitions in the field of profitability, sustainability, and a future-proof dairy sector.’
'Global demand for dairy continues to grow and is set to average 3% up to 2030 (Melkveevisie, January 2023). Combined with dairy farmers’ needs to produce more efficiently and sustainably, the demand for our Lely robots is increasing. On the other hand, we faced quite a few challenges last year, such as component shortages and a class action lawsuit in the US. After our turnover stagnated in 2021, we can be satisfied with the growth we achieved in 2022 under challenging conditions. Among our customers, we see high customer satisfaction. At the same time, it is difficult for them to face longer delivery times for new products.'
Highlights
'In 2022, we celebrated '30 years of automatic milking' with the Lely Astronaut, launched a new-generation Juno feed pusher and won several awards for our latest innovations, Lely Sphere and Lely Exos. Besides the continuous development of our existing product portfolio, we are seeing high adoption of our Lely Horizon data management platform, which converts data from our robots into advice on optimal operations. Since its introduction in 2020, around 92% of our customers have already switched to this system.'
Outlook for 2023
'In our 75th anniversary year 2023, Lely expects strong sales growth again. The increasing demand for dairy around the globe continues and the order book by closure of 2022 was healthy and record-high covering all products in its portfolio. Also due to the fact that during 2022 orders moved to 2023 due to component shortages.
Although the world’s global supply chain is still recovering from COVID lockdowns and changing geopolitics will have significant consequences, Lely looks forward to a bright future. The company has taken significant steps to become less vulnerable in the supply chain of components which will pay back in delivering on time and shorter lead times.
During our jubilee celebrations, Lely presented its new vision of the farm of the future, allowing new themes for innovation and product development and how innovation can contribute to the big challenges facing dairy farming.
Foreseeing the company’s growth, we have announced a new organizational structure to be ready for growth, to better support delivering on our mission, vision and strategy. That growth requires shorter and simpler processes, with clear responsibilities. A future-proof organisation, that successfully brings new products and services to the market, with a healthy portfolio turnover balance and high satisfaction among farmers, Lely Centers and employees. The future organization will be implemented as of September 2023.'
Building a sustainable future for livestock farmers, cows, the planet and everyone who lives on it now. The challenges the agricultural sector is facing today are bigger than ever. Innovative and responsible solutions are needed to meet the growing worldwide demand for dairy. To feed the future, we must further reduce the environmental impact of the sector, improve animal welfare and respond to the consumer’s demand to know where and how dairy products are made. We must also address labour shortages and help farmers to keep their business running.
At Lely we are working on the farm of the future, where circularity and animal welfare are key. In this annual review we share our progress on how we want to accomplish the reuse of important nutrients, the feeding of fresh grass, waste reduction, emission reduction and creating a closer connection between the farmer and the consumer. Lely's 'Farm of the Future' is fully robotised and consists of integrated solutions that work 24 hours a day. On this farm, completely centred around the cow, repetitive tasks such as feeding and milking are automated, enabling the farmer to focus on what really requires his attention.
